Tip of the Day
Don’t fall in love with your working title
June 2, 2011
Have you had a colleague tell you the working title of their book and you cringe? Too many would-be authors fall in love with their working title.
Instead, come up with 12-20 possible titles for the book. Then pass it by representatives of your target market — not your friends and family, who love you and will encourage anything you do. No, you need to pass it by your target buyers — acquaintances or even strangers. Ask them to rate each title on a 1-10 scale based on how motivated they would be to buy your book based on the title. They will also give you suggestions on title modifications. If you agree, work these new options into your test, taking out the bottom vote getters so you aren’t inundating your raters with options.
A great way to do this is to pass out a ballet with possible titles to an audience of your target group. Keep refining until you find a title you like and one that your target audience says will motivate them to purchase.
